As the world celebrates international woman’s day today, 8th March 2025, we want to acknowledge the talented hard working women’s in the creative industry. Often times we see only the shining of female artist in the industry but we hardly see-through all the struggle they go through in a male dominated industry. It’s really difficult to become a star-woman in the Gambian creative industry because how some men abused and take advantage of their weakness and love for the craft.
They endured a lot of stigmatisation and slander from society for a being an female artists in the mix of male dominated industry. We have seen several songstress who has revealed these ordeals and confirmed it is true, they are been abused by males in the music industry. We as people always gives a blind eye or sees it as a non subject and some will even blame them after been victimised.
Despite these challenges we have seen the outburst several amazing strong she-stars and how they managed to outshine the he stars. The classical precedent of that was in 2023 at the WMA music award where Awa Gambia swept all the awards in the presence of prominent male stars.
This is a clear testament, women’s can achieve anything if they are empowered and supported rightly in the creative industry.
On this day, as we reflect on their challenges we want to also wish all the women in the creative industry a happy international women’s Day. The power of art combined with the power of she can move mountains Be resilient, persistent and stay put at all times.
