The Gambia High Commission in London will celebrate the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary by honoring outstanding individuals for their contributions to Gambian culture and sports. The awards ceremony, scheduled for February 23, 2025, at Westminster Methodist Central Hall, will recognize both musicians and athletes who have elevated The Gambia’s image internationally.
In the Music Diplomacy category, renowned kora player Sona Jobarteh will be awarded for her role in promoting Gambian culture through her performances on global stages, including her widely acclaimed song, Gambia. UK-based Gambian artist Pa Salieu Gaye is also being recognised for incorporating Gambian heritage into his music and influencing the UK music scene with his unique style.
In sports, Gambian footballers, Yankuba Minteh and Ebou Adams will receive honors for their contributions to football and their efforts in raising The Gambia’s profile in international sports. Minteh, currently playing in the UK, has gained recognition for his impact on European football, while Adams is being acknowledged for his role in sports diplomacy.
The event will also feature other notable awardees from various fields, including development and the arts. The celebration aims to highlight the contributions of Gambians who have made significant strides in their respective industries while promoting the country on a global scale.
